Hand-coloured, plate-signed pochoir from Falbalas & Fanfreluches: "Pride" is part of the series "The Seven Deadly Sins" from the Almanac of 1924. The new "Daring-Do" of the bold New Age was easiest to depict in the permissivenes of the "risque" theatre settings. This image, with the drama of revolutionized stage lighting presaging that of Hollywood, depicts barely-concealed "Pride" as the woman is disdainfully aware of all the glitter, adoration and razzmatazz that celebrates her very presence. This is Barbier's satiric but knowing nod to the evolving new society and social norms, because the stage was merely the reflection of what was occurring, if not in the streets, at least in the liberated minds of the 20's Parisians. +++++++
This famous illustrated almanac series was produced from 1922 to 1926 only and depicted high-society life in Paris - the fashion, social and artistic capital of the early inter-war years.
