Original costume design, gouache and metallic paint on heavy paper created for the Folies Bergere Revue "Venice in the 18th Century" (Paris, 1919), from the collection of noted fashion designer Ruben Torres (Nina Ricci, White Stag, Warners, & his own label). Artist's commission comments au verso, in Erte's own handwriting. Documentation/verification labels on backboard by Sotheby's (1987) and The McAllen International Museum, Texas, [see P.25 of their exhibition catalog "Erte and His Contemporaries - Costume Designs for the Early Twentieth Century Music Hall in Paris (1988)]". Deep rich saturated color, with Erte's typical fanciful attention to detail, down to the period beauty patches. A rarely-found testament to the artist's earliest and very scarce creations in an exceptionally long career. Signed, lower right. Approx. paper dimensions: H:12.8in X W:8.5in; H:32.7cm X W:21.6cm |
