This is an original pochoir illustration that specially accompanied a rare war issue of La Gazette du Bon Ton, 1917. Drian executed 6 designs for this issue, 3 of them, including this one, featuring the Tricolore; 2 were in more muted tones and Le Communique a study in red and black. There has been considerable speculation as to the possible meanings intended in this series including coded messages and political references. Each image of course delivers a fabulous rendering of the lastest fashion and establishes Drian solidly as leader in the dramatic and elegant illustrative style that would later influence great contemporary artists such as Gruau and Downton.
