Hand coloured and plate-signed pochoir on Japan paper issued hors-texte in the first year of publication of the exclusive French fashion publication Feuillets d'Art (1919). Lepape has conventionalized the face of his model to resemble a traditional Japanese Noh mask, the Eastern source being a key derivative inspiration for many of the exciting new Art Deco design elements. At the time of its appearance this image had a radical impact on design, such as had not been seen since the days of the exhuberant, primary color poster- art of Toulouse Loutrec. This rare piece is one of Lepape's most distinctive images, which has become a leading Art Deco icon internationally.
