Hans Burgkmair (1473-1531) was commissioned by Emperor Maximillian produce a series of illustrations for the Emperor's own written poetic account of his courtship, in which he portrayed himself as the noble knight Theurdanck. The work was published in Nuremberg in 1517 and is one of the most beautiful books of its period in artistry, design and printing. This plate depicts how the "Manly Hero Theurdanck" dominates the other knights in swordfighting.
