Hand Painted Woodblock print on rice paper. From Japan c.1880, part of a series of blooms that constituted a pictoral catalogue to introduce horticultualists of the Western world to new Eastern species. The delicate hand-made paper contains powdered mica, which gives a subtle iridescence to the work. Ink-stamped species identification, top center: "No.40 SHIGURE-MOMIJI"
